When the Dog Ate the Papaya

Leo stood at the edge of the padel court, watching the popular kids smash balls back and forth like they'd been born with racquets in their hands. His cousin had dragged him to this country club party, and honestly? Leo felt like a fraud in his borrowed polo shirt.

"You gonna play or just stand there looking awkward?" called Chloe, the girl whose Instagram stories everyone at school actually watched.

Leo's face burned. "Nah, I'm good. Never played."

"It's literally tennis with walls, Leo. Not rocket science." She tossed him a racquet.

The first hit went wild. Like, *wild* wild — straight over the fence into the gardens. Leo muttered a string of curses and chased after it, already planning his permanent move to Antarctica.

That's when he found the dog.

A scruffy golden retriever mix sat beside his ball, tail thumping against a papaya tree. The dog looked at Leo like *sup*, then snatched the racquet ball and trotted over, dropping it at his feet.

"At least someone likes me," Leo said, scratching behind the dog's ears. The dog leaned into his touch, and for some stupid reason, Leo's eyes stung. This random dog with matted fur was the first living thing that'd been genuinely nice to him all day.

The dog's nose twitched. It bounded to the papaya tree and returned with a fallen fruit, dropping it proudly at Leo's feet like it was some kind of offering.

"You think I'm gonna eat that?" Leo laughed. But when he looked back at the padel court, at all the polished kids and their perfect serves, something shifted. He sat down in the grass with the dog, sharing his papaya with the only friend who'd actually made an effort today.

Later, Chloe found them there. "What are you doing?"

"Eating papaya with the best dog ever," Leo said, and he didn't even feel awkward about it.

She sat down beside him. "That's actually kinda cool."

Sometimes the best moments happen when you stop trying to fit in and just let the dog choose you instead.
