When the Bull Had a Sweet Tooth

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter like an alien spacecraft, all mottled orange-green and smelling weirdly sweet. My mom's new 'health kick' phase.

"Try it, Leo," she said, slicing into the thing. "It's literally a superfood."

I made a face. "Yeah, and I literally have swimming practice in twenty minutes. Coach is already on my case about my dive. He thinks I'm overthinking it. Which, honestly? Valid."

The truth was, I *was* overthinking it. But also? The varsity team was watching. Specifically, Jasmine from junior year was watching. The girl who'd texted me 'good luck' before the meet last week and then ignored me in the hallway for three days straight. My brain was doing laps around itself.

The next morning, my best friend Kai picked me up in his brother's truck. We were supposed to go to this party at Haley's house - her parents were out of town, which obviously meant it was gonna be low-key chaos.

"Dude," Kai said, tossing me his phone. "Haley posted about her cousin's farm. Apparently there's a BULL there. Like, an actual bull. In a pasture."

I stared at him. "Why is this exciting?"

"Because Tyler said he'd pet it for fifty bucks, and now everyone's taking bets. It's gonna be a whole thing."

A whole thing it was. By midnight, half the soccer team was drunk, Tyler was on live stream attempting to pet a bull that was clearly NOT having it, and I was sitting on the back porch watching Haley slice more of that damn papaya for anyone brave enough to try it.

Jasmine sat down next to me. She looked different under the string lights - softer, maybe. Or maybe that was just the cheap beer talking.

"Your dive was sick today," she said, like she'd been thinking about it.

My stomach did this weird fluttery thing. "Thanks. I was nervous."

"Couldn't tell." She nudged my shoulder with hers. "Wanna try this? It's actually pretty good if you get past the texture."

She held out a piece of papaya. I took it, and our fingers brushed for just a second too long. Somewhere in the distance, I heard Tyler scream as the bull shifted its weight.

"So," Jasmine said, leaning closer. "You ever gonna text me back, or what?"

I swallowed the papaya. It wasn't bad. Actually, it was kind of perfect.

"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, I think I am."
