When the Bull Charged

Maya's thumbs flew across her iPhone screen, typing and deleting the same text for the tenth time. *You coming to the festival?* Simple. Casual. Not desperate.

"You gonna stare at that screen all day or actually hit send?" Javier leaned against the cafeteria table, spinning his pen like it owed him money.

"Shut up." Maya's cheeks burned. "It's complicated."

"It's really not." He snatched her phone—her **iPhone** 13 with the cracked screen she swore added character—and tapped send before she could react. "There. Done. You're welcome."

Maya's heart hammered. Daniel, the cute junior from AP History, would think she was cool. Chill. Not the girl who'd once fallen flat on her face while giving a presentation.

But the festival changed everything.

The annual Latinx heritage festival in Maya's neighborhood always brought chaos: thumping reggaeton, abuelos grilling carne asada, tías gossiping louder than the music, and yes—the mechanical **bull** that teenage boys like Daniel insisted on riding to prove something.

"Watch this!" Daniel waved from the line, swagger radiating off him like cheap cologne. "I'm gonna crush it."

Maya's stomach did that awful fluttery thing. She squeezed her backpack straps, sweating through her favorite crop top. Her abuela had given her cash to buy **papaya** from Doña Carmen's stand—supposedly the freshest in the neighborhood—but Maya couldn't focus on fruit right now.

"Mija, come here!" Doña Carmen waved her over, her smile gaps-toothed and warm. "I saved you the good one."

Maya accepted the papaya, its sunset-orange flesh glistening. It was perfect, and suddenly she realized she was too. The papaya in her hands, the music swelling, her abuela laughing somewhere behind her—this was real. Daniel on a mechanical bull trying to impress everyone was just performance.

Then came the shriek.

Daniel flew off the bull mid-buck, crashing into a display of homemade pottery. Clay shattered everywhere. The crowd gasped, then burst into sympathetic laughter.

Daniel pushed himself up, dust-covered and grinning, completely owning his spectacular fail. He caught Maya's eye and winked.

Maya's phone buzzed. *That was spectacular. You still coming over later?*

She typed back, thumbs steady. *Absolutely. Bring ice.*

The papaya was sweet against her tongue, and for the first time all day, Maya wasn't nervous at all.
