When the Bear Found Me

papayavitaminbear

The papaya sat in my lunchbox like a tropical accusation. My mom, in her infinite wisdom, had packed exotic fruit instead of the normal chips everyone else had. I could feel the judgment radiating from Taylor's table as I pulled it out—bright orange flesh mocking my entire existence.

"Dude, what IS that?" Marcus asked, leaning in with actual curiosity.

"It's... papaya," I said, wishing I could disappear. "My mom's going through this health phase."

"Let me try," Maya said from across the table, and suddenly all eyes were on her first bite. Her face did this complicated thing—confusion, then surprise, then approval.

"Okay, that's actually lowkey fire," she said, and just like that, I wasn't the weird kid with weird fruit anymore. I was the kid who brought the good stuff.

The bear thing started two weeks later at Jordan's party. Someone's older brother had this ridiculous dance move called "the bear"—all stiff arms and weird growling noises. Normally I'd ghost that situation so hard, but Maya was watching.

So I did it. I full-on committed to the bear, weird arm movements and everything. Everyone died laughing, but not like mean laughing. Like, "your awkwardness is actually kind of legendary" laughing.

"Yo, nobody commits to the bear like that," Jordan said, fist-bumping me. And yeah, it was cringe, but it was also... something else.

Now my vitamin gummies sit on my desk like my one rebellion against Mom's wellness obsession. She still sends the papaya, but sometimes Maya asks for some. Sometimes I do the bear at lunch just to hear them laugh. And okay, maybe I'm still figuring out who I am, but at least I know I'm not the kid hiding in the background anymore. Sometimes the weirdest parts of you are exactly what people actually like.
