When the Bear Crashed the Pool Party

Maya's summer was turning into a disaster before it even started. Her parents had decided to send her to Camp Pineview for "character building" aka completely ruining her social life. The first day? Total awkwardness. Everyone seemed to know each other from last year, and she was the lonely new girl clutching her phone like a lifeline.

Then she noticed Jayden, the cute counselor's assistant, slicing up a weird fruit at the snack table. "That's papaya," he said, catching her staring. "Super exotic, right? My mom's obsessed with health food." Maya tried a piece. It tasted like sunshine smelled, and suddenly she wasn't the new girl anymore — she was someone who tried exotic fruits with cute boys.

By day three, she'd mastered the art of pool edge lounging. The camp pool became her kingdom, her orange towel her throne. She and Jayden had developed this thing — lingering by the deep end, him pretending to check pH levels while they actually talked about everything from music to his failed band career. Maya felt herself changing, like she was finally becoming someone interesting.

Then came the bear. Not a metaphorical bear, but an actual black bear that wandered into camp during free swim, drawn by the fruit buffet. Chaos erupted. Girls screaming, counselors shouting, everyone running toward the main lodge. Maya found herself sprinting beside Jayden, hearts pounding in perfect rhythm.

They hid behind the art cabin, breathless and terrified. "Your orange towel is still by the pool," Jayden whispered between laughs. "Totally sacrificed for the cause." Maya laughed too, realizing this was officially the weirdest, most amazing moment of her life.

The bear left after stealing the papaya (ironic, right?), but Maya left something too — that insecure girl who couldn't make friends. Sometimes you need a literal bear to chase away the metaphorical ones. Plus, Jayden held her hand during the chaos, so — definite win.
