When the Bear Crashed the Party
The baseball fields behind Jake's house were supposed to be empty at midnight. That was the plan, anyway. Pool party, no parents, questionable music choices courtesy of someone's iPhone DJ setup. Classic summer vibes, right?
I floated in the shallow end, nursing a flat soda and watching everyone else actually have fun. Marcus was doing cannonballs off the diving board like he invented them. Chloe and her squad were in the deep end, laughing way too hard at something I definitely didn't understand. I checked my phone—three new notifications, all from my mom asking if I was "having fun yet."
"You gonna stay in that corner all night?"
I jumped. Okay, flailed. This guy with messy dark hair and a faded baseball jersey was leaning against the pool edge. Not Marcus. Not anyone I actually knew.
"I'm good," I said, because awkward is my default setting.
"I'm Tyler. Marcus's cousin from Colorado."
"Maya."
"Cool pool," he said. "Way better than the lake back home. Our idea of excitement is watching cows escape their fence."
I laughed. Actually laughed.
Then the music cut.
"Yo, who touched the playlist?" Marcus shouted.
But it wasn't the playlist. A massive shadow moved at the edge of the patio, where the pool lights barely reached. Something brown and furry and roughly the size of a vending machine.
"Is that..." Tyler started.
"Bear," I whispered, because my brain had short-circuited.
The bear lumbered toward the patio table where someone's iPhone sat playing a hip-hop track I'd heard a million times before. The bear sniffed the phone.
"Nobody move," Chloe said from the deep end, suddenly very quiet.
The bear sat down. Like, literally sat on its butt like a confused dog. It pawed at the iPhone.
"It's vibing with the music," Tyler said under his breath.
And then—I swear to god—the bear started bobbing its head. Just slightly. But it was definitely happening.
"Is it dancing?" Marcus asked.
"The bear has better rhythm than you," Chloe observed.
We all lost it. Not screaming-running-away lost it, but hysterical-can't-breathe laughter. Because what else do you do when a random black bear crashes your pool party and apparently enjoys trap music?
The bear finally got bored, grabbed a half-eaten bag of chips, and lumbered back toward the baseball fields. The music kept playing.
"Did we just get schooled by a bear?" Tyler asked.
"Bro, the bear's the real MVP here," Marcus said.
I looked at Tyler, still laughing, and realized I hadn't checked my phone in twenty minutes.
"Wanna get out of the pool?" he asked. "I think I need to sit down. That was...
"Yeah," I said. "Me too."
Sometimes the best nights aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're the ones where a bear crashes the party and you maybe, just maybe, make a real friend in the chaos.
