When Spinach Hits the Fan

Maya's phone buzzed again. Another notification from the group chat: 'petty reasons ur crush won't notice u.' She groaned and flipped it face-down on the cafeteria table. Senior year was supposed to be *her era*, but so far, it was just her overanalyzing every interaction with Lucas like she was writing a dissertation instead of just living.

Her sister's ancient cat, Pickles, had more rizz than she did, and Pickles literally slept 20 hours a day.

"You gonna eat that?" Chloe nodded at Maya's tray.

"Not hungry. Nervous stomach. Lucas is sitting at our table today."

"Chill, he's just a guy who happens to be devastatingly cute and plays guitar," Chloe said, stealing a forkful of Maya's salad. "Why'd you even get spinach? You hate it."

"Trying to be healthy. New semester, new me, or whatever." Maya poked at the green leaves. "Figured if I started eating actual vegetables, maybe I'd magically transform into someone who has her life together."

Chloe snorted. "Girl, you're fighting demons in the group chat at 2 AM about whether Lucas's Spotify playlist being public means he wants you to look at it. Spinach isn't gonna fix that."

Then Lucas approached, and Maya's brain performed a complete factory reset. She stood up too fast, her elbow caught the tray, and suddenly her salad was airborne. That notorious *physics of disaster* where time slows down but you're powerless to stop it.

The spinach hit everything. Lucas's white hoodie. Chloe's open backpack. The floor. And somehow, a glob landed on Maya's own nose like she was some kind of avant-garde vegetable enthusiast.

"Oh my god," someone whispered.

The entire cafeteria went silent. That specific high school silence where you can hear the injustice of it all.

Then Lucas started laughing. Not mean laughing—but genuine, head-thrown-back laughing. "Okay, that was legendary."

Maya wanted to evaporate. Instead, she wiped the spinach from her nose and said, "That's me. Just making sure everyone gets their greens."

"Weird flex," Lucas grinned, "but I respect it. You good?"

"Never been bett—" And then her phone lit up with a notification from the family group chat: a video of Pickles the cat attacking their neighbor's dog. The caption read: 'Your fur brother has big main character energy today.'

"Is that... a cat fighting a dog?" Lucas asked.

"My sister's cat," Maya said, finally laughing. "Pickles has delusions of grandeur. Thinks he's a wolf."

"Relatable," Lucas said. "I once pretended to know how to skate for three months because I thought a girl would like it. Ended up in Urgent Care."

"You?" Maya blinked. "But you're so..."

"Confident?" Lucas shrugged. "Fake it 'til you make it, right? Though spinach wars wasn't in my playbook."

The bell rang, saving her from having to respond. As they packed up, Lucas said, "Hey, maybe skip the veggies tomorrow. Burgers are way less weaponizable."

"Noted."

Walking to her next class, Maya's phone buzzed. A new message from Lucas: *Group chat at the game tonight? You can tell us more about Pickles. Dog hater sounds like a whole personality.*

She typed back: *Only if you tell me about the skateboarding injury. Full details. No edits.*

*Deal.*

Maybe the spinach was a sign. Maybe senior year wouldn't be about reinventing herself into someone cooler. Maybe it was about finding people who liked her because she was a disaster sometimes.

Besides, Pickles would definitely approve of causing a scene.
