When Papaya Met Zombie Mode

Maya's first day at Riverside High felt like walking into a reality show where everyone else knew the script. She clutched her orange—her nervous habit since fourth grade—and prayed her papaya-scented shampoo wasn't broadcasting her family's Sunday fruit market traditions to the entire cafeteria.

"Hey, nice orange," someone said. Maya looked up to see Jordan, the guy whose TikTok edits she'd been lowkey stalking since summer. "Is that, like, a thing? Or are you just vitamin C deficient?"

"It's... a thing," Maya managed, her brain operating on pure zombie mode from three hours of sleep. Her little brother's birthday party had turned into a chaos marathon of sugar-crashed seven-year-olds.

"Cool," Jordan nodded, sliding into the seat opposite her. "I'm running on zombie energy too. Debate club killed me last night."

They talked through lunch—about teachers who'd clearly given up on life, about how the school's mystery meat looked suspiciously like reconstituted cardboard, about how Jordan's orange sneakers matched Maya's fruit. Maya felt something shift inside her, like sunlight through clouds.

"Want to come to my house Friday?" Jordan asked suddenly. "My mom's making papaya smoothies. They're actually fire, I swear."

Maya blinked. Papaya smoothies? At school? This was either the universe's weirdest coincidence or a sign from the cosmos.

"Only if you promise not to judge my zombie state," she said. "I have math tutoring until 7 PM, and I'll be functioning on, like, 2% brain capacity."

Jordan grinned. "Same. We can be zombies together."

As Maya walked to her next class, still holding her orange like a lifeline, she realized something: maybe high school wouldn't be so terrifying after all. Sometimes the weirdest things—papaya, zombies, oranges—collided in the most beautiful ways.
