When Papaya Met Padel
Mia's frizzy hair was already giving her grief before she even stepped onto the padel court. She'd spent forty-five minutes with the straightener that morning, only for the humidity to turn her efforts into a puffball by third period. Now here she was, at the country club where Tyler—from biology, the Tyler who sat two rows back and had that lazy smile—was supposedly hanging out.
Her golden retriever, Buster, had bounded through the front door that morning, leaving muddy paw prints on her white skirt. Mom had chased him out with a papaya, of all things—some weird health kick she'd gotten into lately. Mia had to change clothes three times. Why did today have to be the day everything went wrong?
She adjusted her grip on the padel racquet, her palms sweating. The neon green ball whizzed past her ear during warmups.
"Maybe try actually hitting it?" someone from the boys' side called out. A ripple of laughter followed.
Heat crept up her neck. Tyler watched from the sidelines, a papaya-colored smoothie in hand, and she felt like she might actually die from embarrassment.
On her way back to the bench, she wasn't watching where she was going—because of course she wasn't—and collided directly with him.
Papaya smoothie splashed everywhere. All over her white shirt. All over the court.
"I am SO sorry," he said, and his voice was genuinely kind, not mocking. "Let me help you with that."
That's when Buster—who'd apparently been waiting by the fence the whole time—squeezed through the maintenance gate, paws muddy from the morning dew, and launched himself straight at Tyler's legs.
Chaos erupted. Mia grabbed her dog's collar, papaya dripping down her front, her hair a magnificent disaster zone. But Tyler was laughing. Actually laughing, not mean-laughing.
"I like the chaotic energy," he said, grinning as he wiped smoothie off his arm. "And honestly? That shirt needed some color anyway."
Her best friend Priya appeared beside her, fanning herself dramatically. "Did that just happen?"
Mia glanced down at her papaya-stained shirt, her dog sitting proudly at her feet, her hair doing whatever it wanted. Tyler was still grinning at her like she was the most interesting person in the room.
"Yeah," she said, feeling something like hope bubbling in her chest. "I think it kind of did."
Her phone buzzed that night. Unknown number: *This is Tyler. Padels tomorrow? You can bring the dog. Your hair looked cool btw.*
She stared at her ceiling, smiling at nothing.
Maybe chaotic energy was exactly her vibe.
