When Papaya Hit the Fan

Maya's palms were sweating legit Niagara Falls as she stood outside Jayden's house party. The bass thudded against the garage door like a second heartbeat. She smoothhed her frizzy curls for the thousandth time, wishing she'd straightened her hair instead of letting it do its natural thing.

"You got this," she whispered, but her hands shook like she'd mainlined five espressos.

Inside, the air smelled like cheap body spray and desperation. Maya spotted her crush, Sam, across the room, laughing at something someone said. His hair fell perfectly across his forehead because of course it did.

Maya beelined for the food table like her life depended on it. Social interaction could wait until she'd evaluated the snacks. That's when she saw it: a bowl of papaya chunks sitting there like some sort of tropical trap.

"Who even likes papaya?" someone said beside her. It was Sam.

Maya's brain short-circuited. "My abuela swears by it," she heard herself say. "She says it's basically nature's multivitamin."

Sam raised an eyebrow. "That's... oddly specific?" He smiled, and Maya's stomach did somersaults that had nothing to do with the sketchy-looking guacamole.

"I could take it or leave it, honestly," Maya continued, leaning casually against the table like she wasn't internally screaming. "But she acts like papaya is the solution to all of life's problems. Bad grades? Eat papaya. Boy trouble? Papaya. Existential crisis? Definitely papaya."

Sam laughed. It was this genuine sound that made Maya's chest feel weirdly warm. "My mom's like that with chicken soup. What's your abuela's secret?"

Maya paused, suddenly aware of her curls, her culture, everything that made her different in this predominantly white suburb. "Family recipe," she said. "Maybe I'll bring some to the next thing."

"I'd try it," Sam said. And the way he looked at her—really looked at her—made Maya think that maybe, just maybe, she didn't need to fix her hair or hide who she was. She could just be Maya: papaya stories and all.
