When Papaya Goes Wrong
I knew it was a mistake the moment I picked up the fork. The papaya sat there, looking innocent enough, but I was about to destroy my entire social life.
"You've never tried papaya?" Liam asked, his baseball cap backwards and his smile making my stomach do somersaults. He was the varsity baseball star, and I was the girl who'd somehow ended up at his party after the big game.
"Nope," I said, trying to sound chill. "But I'm down to try new things."
Big mistake. Huge.
The papaya tasted like soap mixed with old bananas. I gagged but tried to play it cool, because Liam was watching and his goldfish tattoo was actually kind of cute and I was dying.
"So," I said, trying to distract myself from the aftertaste. "You still playing padel with Jake tomorrow?"
Liam's face lit up. "You know about padel?"
"Obviously," I lied. I'd Googled it twenty minutes earlier when I overheard him talking about it.
"You should come watch," he said, and I mentally fist-pumped while trying not to throw up from the papaya situation.
But then my brain betrayed me. "Yeah, for sure. I love padel. Almost as much as I love... spinach?"
Why. WHY did I say spinach.
The whole room went quiet. Someone's goldfish floated by in its bowl, judging me.
"Spinach?" Liam asked, confused.
"I mean, who doesn't love spinach?" I kept going, unable to stop. "It's so... leafy. And green. Great texture."
I was spiraling. I could feel it happening.
"You good, Maya?" Jake asked from across the room, trying not to laugh.
"I'm fantastic," I said, grabbing my bag. "Just remembered I have to go... feed my pet... who is definitely not a goldfish. Nice papaya, though. Really adventurous of you."
I walked out, papaya aftertaste still haunting me, knowing I'd just humiliated myself in front of the baseball team.
But when I checked my phone later, there was a text from Liam: "You're weird. But in a good way. Padel tomorrow at 4? And maybe we can get actual food instead of papaya."
Maybe social suicide wasn't permanent after all.
