When Palms Sweat Harder

Maya's palms were basically a waterfall. This was it—her first high school house party, and she was already envisioning fifty different ways to embarrass herself in front of everyone. The bass from inside shook the entire suburban frame of Jake's house, making her already-crazy heartbeat sync with the heavy trap music.

Her best friend Dev squeezed her arm. "You good? You look like you're about to pass a kidney stone."

"I'm fine," Maya lied, wiping her sweaty hands on her dress. "Totally chill. Never been chiller."

They walked in, and immediately some sophomore spilled bright red fruit punch all over Maya's favorite white sneakers.

"Oh my GOD, I am SO sorry—"

"It's fine," Maya forced out, staring at the stain. "What is this stuff anyway?"

"Papaya mango blend," the girl said, like that made it better. "My mom bought, like, five cartons."

Papaya. Of course. Because regular fruit punch would be too basic for Jake's crowd.

An hour later, Maya had somehow ended up on the back patio with like, six people she'd barely spoken to before. They were playing some truth-or-dare spinoff, and naturally, someone dared her to put an orange slice up her nose.

"Do it," chanted Tyler, who she'd had a crush on since eighth grade algebra. "Do it, do it—"

She actually did it. The orange juice burned like crazy, and everyone was dying laughing, and for the first time all night, Maya wasn't overthinking every breath. She caught Tyler's gaze in the string lights someone had hung in the trees, and he actually smiled at her.

"You're actually kind of legendary," he said, then immediately went back to talking about college applications like he hadn't just made her entire night.

On the walk home, Dev was still laughing about the orange incident. "Okay but lowkey, that was iconic behavior. You're different now."

Maya looked at her palms—not sweaty anymore. She thought about how she'd spent the whole week obsessing over this night, imagining disasters, when the worst thing that happened was a papaya stain on her shoes and an orange up her nose.

Maybe that was the whole point of high school. A series of weird, messy moments you'd cringe about later, but also kinda treasure. Not because they were perfect, but because they were yours.

"Yeah," Maya said, realizing she was actually smiling. "I guess I am."
