When Lightning Woke the Garden

Lily loved her orange tree more than anything in the whole world. Every morning, she would count the oranges hanging like little suns, waiting for them to ripen.

One rainy afternoon, as water puddled in the garden, a strange thing happened. A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree nearby with a CRACK that made the ground tremble. Lily rushed to the window, her eyes wide.

What she saw made her gasp. Something was moving beneath the orange tree! It looked like a zombie from her storybooks—all wobbly and slow—but instead of being scary, it was covered in glowing orange blossoms.

The creature shuffled toward Lily's window, its movements clumsy but gentle. Raindrops rolled down its leafy skin like tiny pearls. Lily wasn't afraid. She opened her window and whispered, "Are you a zombie?"

The being shook its head slowly. Through the rain, Lily saw its face—it wasn't scary at all. It was smiling, with eyes that sparkled like captured lightning.

"I'm a garden spirit," it seemed to say without speaking. "The lightning woke me from my long sleep."

Lily realized then that not everything scary-looking is truly frightening. Sometimes, things just need a friend.

"Would you like an orange?" Lily asked, holding out the perfect fruit she'd picked that morning.

The spirit's eyes lit up. It took the orange carefully with its leafy fingers and took a bite. Juice dribbled down its chin, and they both laughed.

From that day on, every time it rained, Lily's garden friend would appear. They would share oranges, splash in puddles, and dance in the gentle rain. The other kids in the neighborhood thought it was just a game—a girl pretending with her imaginary zombie friend.

But Lily knew the truth. Sometimes, the most magical friendships come from the most unexpected places. And sometimes, what looks scary at first is really just lonely, waiting for someone brave enough to say hello.
