When Lightning Struck the Country Club
Maya's neon yellow tank top was basically a shout at the preppy silence of the Windsor Hills Country Club. Her mom had finally scored a membership through some work connection, which meant Maya was stuck spending her precious Saturday afternoons watching her brother play padel with kids whose names always seemed to end in 'the Third'.
The courts were ridiculous — enclosed with glass walls like fancy fish tanks where rich kids could show off their backhands in private. Maya sat on the bench, scrolling through TikTok, trying to look as unimpressed as possible.
"Want some fruit?"
She looked up. It was Leo, her brother's doubles partner, standing there with a fancy platter like he was offering her something precious. He had that effortless rich kid hair — the kind that looked messy but definitely wasn't.
"What is it?" Maya asked, already suspicious.
"Papaya. My mom gets it imported." He said it like papaya was some rare element. "Never tried it?"
Maya's face heated up. She definitely hadn't. Her family's fruit rotation was basically apples, bananas, and whatever was on sale at Aldi. "No. Is it, like, sweet?"
"Try it." He held out a piece.
Their fingers brushed. Something weird happened — like static electricity, but weirder. Maya took the bite, expecting it to be fancy and disappointing.
Instead, it tasted like sunshine and something she couldn't name.
"Good?" Leo grinned. He had this tiny chip in his front tooth that made him look human instead of like a rich kid android.
"Actually... yeah?" Maya surprised herself by smiling back.
Outside, the sky darkened. Thunder rumbled like the country club was finally about to get what it deserved.
"We should probably head inside," Leo said, but he didn't move. Neither did Maya.
A crack of lightning split the sky beyond the glass walls, illuminating everything in this sudden, electric blue flash. For a second, Maya saw something real in Leo's eyes — something that wasn't about country clubs or private schools or imported fruit.
"You're not like the other kids here," she said, immediately wanting to bite her tongue.
Leo laughed. "That's what my therapist says."
The strangest summer of Maya's life had just begun, and somehow it all started with papaya and a lightning storm and a boy who played padel but hated every minute of it.
