When Lightning Strikes the Cafeteria
Maya's life had become one long exercise in social reconnaissance. Being a fifteen-year-old girl basically meant you were part-time spy, full-time overthinker. She'd spent weeks tracking Kai's lunch schedule, memorizing his papaya allergy (who even knew papaya allergies existed?), and analyzing every single time he'd liked her Instagram stories. And still, she'd never managed more than three words in person: 'hey,' 'thanks,' and 'cool.'\n\nThe cafeteria was a battlefield of social landmines, and today Maya's mission was critical: finally sit at the same table as Kai. Her hands were literally shaking. She grabbed her tray, heart doing that flippy thing that felt like lightning striking her chest every time she thought about actually talking to him.\n\n'I heard Kai's going to ask Sarah to winter formal,' her best friend Jaz whispered, crushing Maya's entire existence with seven words. 'They were together at that party Friday.'\n\nMaya's stomach dropped. All that spy work for nothing? She'd spent three months becoming an expert on Kai's papaya situation and emo music preferences, and Sarah just swoops in? Classic.\n\n'Whatever,' Maya said, trying to sound chill. 'I don't even care that much.'\n\nThe universe chose that exact moment to prove Maya was a liar. Kai walked past their table, caught her eye, and actually stopped.\n\n'Hey, Maya,' he said. 'I wanted to ask you something.'\n\nThe entire table went dead silent. Jaz's jaw hit the floor. Maya's brain short-circuited. Was this it? The moment?\n\n'So,' Kai rubbed the back of his neck, looking suddenly nervous. 'My friends and I are doing this Sphinx-themed escape room for my birthday next weekend, and I know you're, like, really good at puzzles. I was wondering if you'd want to come?'\n\nMaya blinked. Sphinx escape room? She'd been mentioned in the escape room context?\n\n'Sarah's going too,' he added. 'With some other people.'\n\nOh. So she was invited to a group thing where Sarah would also be there. Maya's heart felt like it had been struck by lightning, but in the worst way. Still, she'd take it.\n\n'Sure,' she managed, trying to sound way more casual than she felt. 'Sounds fun.'\n\nAs he walked away, Jaz practically tackled her. 'Did that just happen? You got invited! To a thing with Kai! Who cares about Sarah, you're officially on his radar!'\n\nMaya couldn't help it. She smiled. Maybe being a teenage spy wasn't so terrible after all. At least now she had an in. And she'd bring extra papaya snacks, just in case.
