When Lightning Strikes

Maya's summer was going absolutely sideways. Working at her abuela's fruit stand should've been chill, but instead she was stuck dealing with the absolute WORST customers. The kind of Karens who'd squeeze every single orange like they were personally offended by produce.

"That papaya's too ripe," this lady said, holding up Maya's favorite fruit like it was radioactive. "Don't you have anything FRESH?"

Maya bit her tongue. Hard. Her abuela would kill her if she started something, but honestly, this lady was full of it. Total bull.

Then HE walked up. Leo from her AP English class, the one she'd been lowkey crushing on all semester. The guy who actually laughed at her terrible jokes and once let her copy the homework she totally forgot to do.

"What's good?" he asked, and Maya's brain went full static.

"The papayas are actually perfect today," she heard herself say. "And these oranges? Literally just came in this morning."

Leo smiled. That genuine, lopsided thing that made her stomach do actual gymnastics. "I'll take whatever you recommend."

Outside, summer lightning flickered across the sky - that weird daytime lightning that never quite becomes a storm. The kind that's just promising something bigger.

Maya's hands were literally shaking as she bagged his fruit. She added an extra papaya on the house because she was either smooth or having a medical emergency, she couldn't tell.

"Thanks, Maya," he said. And then, "Maybe I'll see you around? Not just for fruit?"

The lightning outside flashed again, brighter this time. Her grandmother was watching from behind the counter with this tiny, knowing smile. And suddenly Maya's summer wasn't going sideways anymore.

Some moments hit different. Some moments are lightning strikes - fast, bright, and changing everything in a single heartbeat. Sometimes all it takes is the right person, some overripe fruit, and the courage to say hey.

"Yeah," Maya said, actually smiling now. "I'd like that."
