When Lightning Stole Home

Fiona the fox loved baseball. Every Saturday, she crept through tall grass to the edge of the dusty field where neighborhood children played. Her golden eyes watched the ball arc through blue sky, and her bushy tail twitched with every hit.

One afternoon, storm clouds gathered like gray mountains. The children packed up their gear, but someone forgot something important—a thick black cable coiled near home plate, left behind by the announcers who'd broadcast the game.

Fiona approached cautiously. Then CRACK! Lightning struck the cable, and it began to glow with rainbow colors.

Suddenly, the cable uncoiled like a snake and slithered toward Fiona. It didn't scare her. Instead, it wrapped gently around her paw and tugged, as if inviting her somewhere magical.

She followed.

The cable led her to a hole beneath the backstop. Inside was a tunnel filled with sparkling light. Fiona's heart raced. She'd never seen anything so wonderful!

At the end of the tunnel, she discovered something impossible: a secret baseball field hidden beneath the real one, where magical creatures played the most amazing game. Fireflies buzzed like tiny umpires. Rabbits hit balls that turned into butterflies when struck. A wise old owl kept score with golden feathers.

"We need a player," called a badger with a baseball glove. "Our fox friend just moved away. Will you take her place?"

Fiona nodded, her tail wagging.

She played until sunrise, catching balls of starlight and hitting home runs that made the moon smile. When she returned to her forest, the glowing cable was gone—but in her heart, Fiona carried something better than any treasure: friendship with magical friends, and the knowledge that the most wonderful adventures find you when you least expect them.

Every Saturday, Fiona still watches baseball from the tall grass. But now she watches for more than just the game. She watches for lightning, wondering when it might invite her to play again beneath the world.

And sometimes, just sometimes, she sees a rainbow glow near home plate that no one else can see.
