When Lightning Sparked Magic

Seven-year-old Mia loved stormy nights. She would press her face against the window, watching raindrops race down the glass like tiny silver athletes. But tonight was different.

A crack of lightning flashed purple across the sky, and something magical happened. Mia's iPhone, which she'd left on her windowsill, suddenly glowed with a soft green light. Her stuffed cat, Mr. Whiskers, had fallen onto the phone—and when the lightning struck again, Mr. Whiskers twitched his tail!

Mia gasped. Her fluffy orange cat sat up, stretched, and blinked his button eyes.

"Mia!" squeaked a voice from her toy box. "The lightning woke us up!"

A small zombie action figure climbed out—a gift from her uncle, painted green and purple with stitches on his face. But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He held out his tiny plastic hand.

"I'm Zed," he said. "And I've always wanted to be your friend."

Mia's eyes widened with wonder. "You're alive?"

"Only until the storm ends," Zed explained. "Lightning magic is special. It brings things to life for one night. Want to play?"

They had the most wonderful adventure. Mr. Whiskers told cat jokes that made Mia giggle. Zed showed her how to dance a zombie shuffle, slow and silly. The iPhone played happy songs while they built a pillow fort and ate rainbow sprinkles from the kitchen.

"I always thought you were scary," Mia admitted.

"That's just my paint job," Zed smiled. "Inside, I'm just a friend who hasn't met you yet."

As the storm faded and dawn approached, Zed grew still. Mr. Whiskers curled up on Mia's pillow, just a stuffed cat again. But Mia knew the truth.

She placed Zed on her nightstand, right beside her iPhone and Mr. Whiskers.

"Goodnight, friends," she whispered, closing her eyes.

Sometimes the scariest-looking things are actually the kindest. And sometimes, just sometimes, lightning brings you exactly what you need: friends who were there all along, just waiting for the magic moment to say hello.
