When Lightning Learned to Play
Lily loved her old blue hat. It had a white stripe and holes for her ponytail, and she wore it everywhere—especially when she played baseball in the park near the sparkling lake.
One hot afternoon, Lily practiced her swing. The air grew heavy and thick. Dark clouds gathered like big gray pillows. The first rumble of thunder rolled across the sky like a giant bowling down a bowling alley.
"Time to go home!" called her mom from the porch.
But as Lily grabbed her baseball glove, something amazing happened. A bolt of lightning shot down from the clouds—not scary and sharp, but glowing and gentle, like a bright yellow ribbon floating on the breeze.
"Hello!" said the lightning, and its voice sounded like crackling fire and happy giggles mixed together. "I've watched you play. May I try?"
Lily's eyes grew wide. "But you're lightning! You don't have hands!"
The lightning zipped and zoomed, shaping itself into the form of a little glowing person. "I can learn! Will you teach me?"
Lily placed her old blue hat on the lightning's head. It fit perfectly. For the next hour, Lily taught Lightning how to hold a bat, how to throw a ball, and how to run the bases. Lightning learned quickly, sometimes moving a little too fast.
"Too fast!" laughed Lily as Lightning zipped past third base in one second.
Just then, rain began to fall—big, splashy drops of water that danced on the ground. The water droplets joined their game, sliding and swirling around the bases, making slippery puddles that turned baseball into an even more magical game.
"This is the best day ever!" said Lightning, glowing brighter with happiness. "I never knew playing could be so fun."
Lily smiled. "That's what friends do—they teach each other new things."
As the storm passed, Lightning floated back up to the clouds. "Thank you, Lily! I'll never forget this. Whenever you see me in the sky, I'll be thinking of you!"
Now, whenever Lily plays baseball and a storm rolls in, she waves to her friend. And sometimes, just sometimes, she sees a little flicker of lightning wearing a familiar blue hat, dancing among the clouds.
