When Lightning Danced on Willow Lake

Emma loved storms. She loved the way the sky turned purple and the air smelled like rain. But most of all, she loved sitting by Willow Lake in her yellow raincoat, watching the water turn into tiny dancing diamonds.

One night, a特别 bright bolt of lightning shot down from the clouds and SPLASHED right into the middle of the lake. Emma gasped as the water glowed like a thousand fireflies. Then, something magical happened.

A creature rose from the water. It looked a little silly—a being made of lake water and sparkles, with googly eyes made of lightning bugs. It wobbled and wiggled, moving in the funniest way, like it was still learning how to be alive.

"Are you... a zombie?" Emma whispered, remembering the word from her big brother's video games.

The creature shook its watery head. "No! I'm a Sparkle Sprite! The lightning woke me up from a hundred-year nap at the bottom of the lake. I've been sleeping like a zombie for so long!" Its voice sounded like bubbles popping.

Emma giggled. "I'm Emma. Do you want to see the world?"

"Oh yes!" cried the Sparkle Sprite. "But I need water to stay sparkly. If I dry out, I'll go back to sleep."

Emma had an idea. She filled her special blue water bottle from the lake, and the Sprite jumped right inside, making the water glitter like magic. For the next week, they had wonderful adventures together. The Sprite showed Emma how to make rainbows with garden hose sprinkles. Emma showed the Sprite ice cream (which made it shiver with delight), butterflies, and dandelion fluff.

"Friendship is the best magic," the Sprite said one evening. "The lightning woke me, but you made me feel alive."

When summer ended, the Sprite had to return to the lake. But now, every time Emma visits Willow Lake during a storm, she sees extra-sparkly ripples on the water. Her friend sends magical messages in lightning flash patterns: three quick flashes means "I miss you" and one long glow means "Thank you for being my friend."

Emma learned that magic can be found anywhere—even in a lightning bolt, even in something that seemed strange at first, and especially in the kindness of making a new friend.
