When Lightning Came for Dinner
Lily loved her garden. Every afternoon, she watered the neat rows of vegetables and whispered to them as they grew. But her absolute favorite was the spinach. It didn't look like ordinary spinach—it shimmered with tiny sparkles, and when the wind blew through its leaves, it made soft chiming sounds like tiny bells.
One afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Lily ran outside to cover her precious plants before the storm hit. But just as she reached the spinach patch, the sky turned purple.
CRACK!
A bolt of lightning shot down—not at a tree or the house, but straight into the spinach patch!
Lily gasped and covered her eyes. When she peeked through her fingers, she couldn't believe what she saw.
The lightning hadn't destroyed the spinach. Instead, it had created something magical. A tiny creature no bigger than a hamster stood among the sparkly green leaves. It was made of crackling blue light, with eyes that glowed like warm stars.
"Hello," said the creature, and its voice sounded like the static between radio stations, soft and friendly.
Lily knelt down slowly. "Hello. Are you... real?"
"I think so," the little lightning being said. "Your spinach called me here. It's very friendly vegetables."
From that day on, Lily and her lightning friend were inseparable. The creature—who she named Zap—loved to curl up in the spinach patch to recharge. Zap helped the garden grow faster by giving the plants just enough gentle energy. In return, the spinach kept Zap glowing bright and happy.
Lily learned something wonderful that summer: the best friends sometimes appear when you least expect them. They might come from a storm, or a garden, or anywhere magic exists. And true friendship doesn't care what you look like—even if you're made of lightning!
Every evening, Lily would sit in the garden with Zap, eating spinach salads while her lightning friend told stories about the sky. The spinach that had called down lightning had given her the greatest gift of all: a friend who would brighten her world forever.
