When Lightning Brought the Sphinx
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, he played with his friends at the park. But this Saturday was different. Dark clouds gathered overhead as Leo stepped up to the plate. He held his favorite bat, worn smooth from hundreds of games.
CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree beyond center field. The ground shook, and a brilliant purple light filled the air. When Leo's vision cleared, something amazing stood on the pitcher's mound.
It was a sphinx—the kind from storybooks, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise person. Her fur shimmered like gold dust.
"Young player," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "I have traveled through time and lightning to find you. Will you answer my riddle?"
Leo's teammates gasped. His best friend Maya whispered, "Say yes!"
"I'll try," Leo said, his heart pounding.
The sphinx smiled. "I have a face like a clock and hands like a player, yet I cannot catch a ball. What am I?"
Leo thought hard. Face like a clock... hands like a player... He looked at his baseball glove, then at his wristwatch. Suddenly, he understood!
"A clock!" Leo exclaimed. "The face has numbers, and the hands move around like players!"
"Correct," the sphinx purred. "For your wisdom, I grant you and your friends a gift." She tapped her paw on the ground. "Whenever you play together, you will never forget that the best victories come not from winning, but from playing with joy and friendship."
With another flash of lightning, she vanished. But from that day on, every time Leo's team took the field, they played with pure happiness. And somehow, they always had the most fun—win or lose.
Leo kept that memory close to his heart, knowing that magic exists when we least expect it, and that true friendship is the greatest treasure of all.
