When Lightning Brought a Friend
Lily was the loneliest girl in town. She lived in a small cottage at the edge of the Whispering Woods, where the trees told secrets to anyone who knew how to listen. But Lily had no one to tell her secrets to. Every morning, she would press her hand against her bedroom window, her palm flat against the glass, wishing for a friend to share adventures with.
One summer evening, the sky turned purple and green. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy, and lightning cracked across the clouds in jagged golden lines. Most children hid under their blankets during storms, but Lily loved them. She loved how the world felt electric and alive, like magic was bubbling just beneath the surface.
She ran outside into the warm rain, holding her palm open to the sky. Suddenly, the strangest thing happened. A tiny bolt of lightning didn't strike the ground or a tree. Instead, it curled like a ribbon and landed right in her palm!
But it didn't hurt. It didn't burn. The little lightning bolt glowed softly, like a piece of star someone had dropped. It pulsed and wiggled, taking the shape of a tiny girl made entirely of golden light.
"Thank you for catching me!" the lightning girl said in a voice like wind chimes. "I'm Spark! I've been looking for someone brave enough to hold lightning."
"I'm Lily," she whispered, afraid if she spoke too loudly, Spark would disappear. "Will you stay?"
"Forever and always," Spark promised, curling up in Lily's palm. "Friends catch each other, even when they're falling."
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: the bravest thing you can do is open your hand and catch what falls from the sky. Sometimes, what you think might be scary is actually exactly what you've been wishing for.
From that day on, Lily was never lonely. She had the best friend in the world, right in the palm of her hand. And whenever storms came, other children stopped hiding. They came to Lily's cottage to watch Spark dance among the clouds, leaving trails of rainbow light that made everyone believe in magic.
Because Lily had opened her palm to the storm, she found friendship in the most unexpected place. And that's the wonderful thing about magic—it often arrives exactly when you need it, if you're brave enough to reach out and catch it.
