When Lightning Bounced
Leo sat alone on his front porch, cradling his worn-out baseball. Every day after school, he watched the neighborhood kids play in the park across the street, but he was too shy to join them.
"Just throw it, Leo," he whispered to himself. "Just go over there and ask."
He never did.
One summer evening, as thunder rumbled in the distance, Leo tossed his baseball against the wooden fence. *Thwack.* The ball bounced back. *Thwack.* Again. He imagined himself hitting a home run in the World Series, the crowd roaring his name.
Suddenly, the sky turned purple. *CRACK!* A jagged bolt of lightning shot down from the clouds and struck Leo's baseball mid-bounce!
Leo jumped back. The ball glowed with a soft golden light, hovering in the air. Then it spoke.
"Hello there, Leo!" said the baseball in a cheerful, squeaky voice. "I'm Bouncer!"
Leo's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"I can do more than talk!" Bouncer spun in circles, leaving sparkly trails. "Lightning made me magical. Now I can be your friend!"
For hours, Leo and Bouncer played the most wonderful game of catch ever. Bouncer could zoom like a rocket, curve around trees, and even change colors! Leo laughed so hard his stomach hurt. For the first time, he wasn't lonely.
"Why did lightning choose me?" Leo asked as they rested on the grass.
Bouncer wobbled thoughtfully. "Because lightning only strikes the things that have the most spark inside them. You, my friend, have a wonderful spark—you just need to let it out."
The next morning, Bouncer was still an ordinary baseball. The magic had faded with the storm. But Leo didn't feel sad anymore. He grabbed his glove and Bouncer, walked across the street, and called out to the kids in the park.
"Hey! Can I play?"
They said yes. And as Leo stepped up to the plate, bat in hand, he felt that lightning spark still glowing inside his heart, ready to shine.
Sometimes, the best friends come from unexpected places, and their magic stays with you forever.
