When Life Gives You Papaya

Maya's palms were sweating so badly she could practically fill a water bottle. Which was ridiculous, because she was just sitting at lunch with the popular crowd—the Pyramid, as everyone called them, since they sat at the highest table in the cafeteria like they were ruling Egypt or something.

"Try this." Chloe pushed a weird orange fruit toward her. "It's papaya. Super exotic."

Maya stared at it. She'd never had papaya. What if she hated it? What if she made a weird face and they made her a social outcast by third period?

"Don't be a chicken," said Tyler, grinning like he knew exactly what she was thinking.

"I'm not being a chicken," Maya shot back, which was a total lie. She was being a whole coop of chickens.

"That's bull," Tyler laughed. "You're scared of fruit. Admit it."

Something snapped inside Maya. Maybe it was the way Chloe was looking at her with those half-pitying, half-amused eyes. Maybe it was weeks of feeling like she was climbing this impossible social pyramid where one wrong move meant tumbling back down to nobody status. Or maybe she was just done letting Tyler call her out.

She grabbed a fork, stabbed a piece of papaya, and shoved it in her mouth.

The texture was like nothing she'd ever experienced—soft and mushy like a banana but with these weird crunchy seeds. The taste hit her like a wave of sunshine and soap, somehow both gross and amazing at the same time.

Everyone was watching. Waiting.

Maya swallowed. "It's... interesting."

Chloe burst out laughing. "That's what I said too! It's like someone made fruit taste like a spa day."

Tyler shook his head, smiling. "Okay, respect. You actually did it."

Maya's palms were still sweaty, but for the first time in weeks, she didn't feel like she was about to fall off the Pyramid. She'd just climbed to the top and realized something important: they were just people who ate weird fruit and made bad jokes.

"Next time," Maya said, reaching for another piece, "I'm picking the exotic food. And y'all are trying it."

"Deal," Chloe said, high-fiving her across the table.

Maya wiped her hands on her jeans and finally felt like she could breathe. Who knew papaya would be the thing that made her brave?
