When Hair Caught Lightning
Lily had the most wild, tangled brown hair in all of Willow Creek. It sprouted in every direction like a bushy hedge, and no matter how much she brushed it, it always sprang back into chaos. The other children giggled when her hair caught on branches during recess. Lily wanted nothing more than smooth, straight hair like her best friend Emma.
One summer evening, as thunder rumbled and clouds gathered overhead, Lily's grumpy old cat Mittens darted out the open door. "Mittens!" Lily cried, grabbing her yellow raincoat. The cat was running fast, her gray fur blending with the darkening sky. Lily chased her through the garden, past the oak tree, toward the woods.
Suddenly, lightning flashed—a brilliant crackle that illuminated everything. Lily gasped as her hair lifted from her head, crackling with tiny sparks of golden light. Each curl glowed like a tiny star, and she felt warmth spreading through her. Her hair wasn't just hair anymore. It had caught the lightning's magic.
Mittens was stuck! The cat had climbed halfway up a tree but couldn't go higher or lower. Her claws scraped against bark as she trembled. Without thinking, Lily reached up with her newly-glowing hair. The curls stretched, longer and longer, wrapping gently around Mittens' body. Lily lifted her cat down with beams of soft, golden light.
Mittens purred, pressing against Lily's cheek. The storm broke, rain falling like diamonds. Lily's hair still shimmered with tiny sparks as she carried her cat home, feeling stronger than she ever had before.
That night, Lily looked in the mirror and smiled. Her hair was still messy, but now she knew—wild hair could catch magic. Sometimes the things that make us different are exactly what make us special.
