When Everything Changed
Maya stood in front of the bathroom mirror, applying her third layer of lip gloss. The orange hoodie she'd spent forty-five minutes choosing lay perfectly on her bed—a bold statement piece for someone who usually blended into the lockers. Today was different. Today, she would finally talk to him.
"You've got this, Maya," she whispered to her reflection. "You're not invisible."
The cafeteria buzzed with its usual lunchtime chaos. Maya's heart did gymnastics as she spotted Jay at his usual table, laughing with his friends. She clutched her lunch bag like a lifeline. Inside sat the papaya her mom had packed that morning—some exotic fruit attempt at being healthy. Whatever.
Maya took a breath and started across the cafeteria. Her orange hoodie felt like a beacon. Hey everyone, look at me, I'm trying too hard! But she kept walking.
She was three steps from Jay's table when Chloe, the human embodiment of everything Maya wasn't, sidled up beside her. "Love the hoodie," Chloe said, but her tone said something else entirely. "So... brave."
"Thanks," Maya managed, before her foot caught on absolutely nothing. The papaya escaped her lunch bag, rolling across the floor like a sad, orange escape artist.
Dead silence. Then someone snorted.
Maya's face burned. She considered faking a seizure, or maybe just spontaneous combustion. But then—Jay stood up. He picked up the papaya, wiped it on his jeans, and handed it back to her.
"My dad says these are packed with vitamin C," he said, like this was the most normal thing ever. "Way better than those gross gummy vitamins my mom makes me take." He grinned. "Want to sit?"
Maya blinked. Chloe rolled her eyes so hard they might get stuck.
"Yeah," Maya said. "Yeah, I do."
Later, as she picked at her papaya while Jay talked about video games, Maya realized something. The hoodie wasn't a statement. She wasn't trying too hard. She was just finally trying.
And sometimes? That's all it takes.
