When Baseballs Became Oranges
Leo hated spinach. Every dinner, his mom placed the green leafy pile on his plate, and every dinner, Leo pushed it around with his fork.
"It's like eating little green trees," he complained, but his mom just smiled. "You'll understand someday."
One Saturday, Leo threw his favorite baseball into the air. It soared higher and higher—until—splash! It landed right in the mysterious pool behind Old Man Miller's house. The pool had always seemed magical, shimmering with an otherworldly glow.
Leo crept closer. The water bubbled, and suddenly—POOF! His baseball floated to the surface, transformed into a perfect, bright orange!
"Whoa!" Leo gasped. His best friend Maya appeared beside him, eyes wide. They watched as the orange rolled onto the grass, followed by another orange, then another—dozens of juicy oranges appearing from nowhere!
The elderly neighbor, Mr. Miller, chuckled from his porch. "The pool shows what's really inside things," he explained. "Your baseball was full of sweetness and energy, just waiting to come out."
Maya picked up an orange and peeled it. "Just like how Leo thinks spinach is gross, but maybe there's sweetness inside too?"
Leo frowned. Then he remembered how his mom grew spinach in their garden, how she tended each leaf with care. That evening, he asked her to show him how to harvest spinach himself.
As they picked the tender green leaves together, Leo tried a small piece. Fresh from the garden, it tasted crisp and sweet—nothing like the mushy pile on his plate.
"You were right," Leo told Maya later. "Some things look different when you see them with fresh eyes. Even spinach."
And sometimes, even the most unexpected things—like baseballs and pools—can hide the sweetest surprises.
