What We Weathered Together
The lightning cracked across the sky just as Elena unlocked her front door, the sudden brilliance catching the tear tracks on her cheeks. She'd spent the evening bearing her soul to Marcus over whiskey that had long since turned lukewarm, confessing the months of silent longing that had hollowed her out from the inside.
Now he stood beside her in the doorway, rain plastering his shirt to his chest, watching her cat Sukie dart between his legs in a panic before bolting into the storm. "I'll help you find her," Marcus said, his voice rough with the same weight they'd both been carrying for years.
They moved through the deluge like ghosts, calling Sukie's name until their voices merged with the thunder. Under the porch of the abandoned house next door, they found the cat trembling, and when Marcus reached for her, his hand brushed Elena's. The contact was electric - not gentle, not tentative, but fierce with everything they'd suppressed.
"We shouldn't," Elena whispered, even as she stepped closer.
"We're terrible at shouldn't," Marcus replied, and then his mouth was on hers, tasting of rain and whiskey and desperate relief. Lightning illuminated them again - two friends finally acknowledging what they'd become, Sukie purring safely in his arms, the storm no longer something to fear but something to endure together.
