What We Leave Behind

The divorce papers sat on the kitchen counter beside a papaya, its yellow-orange flesh already browning at the edges. Elena had bought it three days ago, back when she still thought they might eat breakfast together, pretending everything was fine.

Now, Marcus was gone. He'd taken the dog—Buster, that loyal golden retriever who'd greeted her at the door for seven years. The cat, Luna, had chosen to stay with Elena, perhaps sensing her desperation, or perhaps simply because she'd always been Marcus's favorite anyway. Luna watched Elena now from the top of the refrigerator, yellow eyes unblinking, judging.

The apartment felt cavernous without Buster's nails clicking on the hardwood, without Marcus's humming in the shower. Elena had taken to swimming at the community center every evening, cutting through the water until her muscles burned and she couldn't think. The pool was the only place where she didn't feel like she was waiting for something to happen.

She cut into the papaya, juice running down her wrist. It was overripe now, soft and fermenting—sweet in a way that made her chest ache. They'd bought their first papaya together in Hawaii, on that trip where they'd sworn they'd make it work, no matter what. She'd believed him then. She'd believed a lot of things then.

Luna jumped down and brushed against Elena's leg, purring. It wasn't the same as Buster's enthusiastic full-body wag, but it was something. It was real.

Elena ate the papaya standing at the counter, crying silently. The sweetness flooded her mouth, and for a moment, she let herself remember everything—the way Marcus had looked at her when he proposed, the nights they'd stayed up talking about nothing, the slow quiet unraveling that neither of them seemed able to stop.

The dog was gone. The marriage was over. But the papaya was still sweet, and the cat was still purring, and tomorrow she would go swimming again. Elena rinsed her plate, turned off the kitchen light, and carried herself toward bed.
