What We Hide

The surveillance photos lay scattered across Elena's desk like fallen leaves. Six months she'd spent watching him—Jonathan from Accounting, his dark hair always perfectly combed, his routine as predictable as clockwork. 5:47 AM at the gym. 8:02 AM buying black coffee. 6:15 PM walking his daughter to swimming lessons.

Now those photos would destroy him.

Her cat, Oscar, jumped onto the desk, knocking over a stack of documents. He purred loudly, oblivious to the moral collapse happening around him. Elena stroked his fur, trying to remember the last time she'd felt something clean and uncomplicated.

"You're a terrible spy," she whispered to him.

The spinach in her lunch container had gone slimy. She pushed it aside, her stomach churning. Corporate espionage had seemed glamorous when they'd pitched it—uncovering the mole leaking trade secrets. But Jonathan wasn't selling company data. He was selling himself, piece by piece, to pay for his wife's cancer treatments. The confidential client lists he'd leaked had bought her three more months of chemo.

Elena's hand hovered over the 'send' button on her email. The report was ready. Damning. Complete.

She thought about her own husband, still swimming in medical debt from his father's illness. The sleepless nights, the whispered fights in the kitchen, the way love sometimes felt like drowning together instead of separately.

Oscar meowed, demanding attention.

Elena attached the photos instead to a personal message. Her fingers trembled as she typed: *I know what you're doing. I know why. Meet me tomorrow, 7 AM, the coffee shop on 4th. Bring your own coffee. This one's on me.*

Then she deleted the report. Empty trash. Twice.

Her boss would ask questions. Her career might take a hit. But as Oscar curled up in her lap, purring like a tiny, judgmental engine, Elena finally understood what her grandmother had meant about the difference between what's right and what's easy.

Some secrets deserved keeping.
