What the Stray Saw

bullpalmhaircatpapaya

Elena smoothed the silver strands escaping her bun, aware of how the humidity had frizzed her hair into something resembling her life—unruly, untended, desperately in need of attention. She watched Vince across the restaurant table, his bull neck flushed from heat and too much rum, pontificating about market trends as if their twenty-year marriage hadn't just collapsed over breakfast.

"I'm just saying, the bull market's got legs," he insisted, stabbing at his papaya with unnecessary force. "If you'd just listen—"

"I've listened for twenty years, Vince." She traced the line on her palm that the fortune teller in Mazatlán had claimed meant 'heartbreak ahead.' Elena had laughed then. She wasn't laughing now.

A calico cat wound between their table legs, rubbing against Elena's ankle. She'd been feeding it scraps from her balcony for three mornings, a small secret life she'd built without him. When Vince reached down to shoo it away, his hand brushed her wrist—casual, automatic, utterly devoid of affection.

The cat hissed and bolted.

"You know what your problem is?" Vince wiped papaya juice from his chin. "You're too sentimental. That's why you can't see the opportunity in—"

"In what? In pretending everything's fine?" Elena's voice trembled. "In another twenty years of this?"

Vince opened his mouth, closed it. For the first time, he looked at her—really looked—across the small table with its white linen and tropical centerpiece. The papaya sat between them like a sweet, unspoken thing.

"Are you asking for a divorce?" he asked quietly.

Elena watched the cat reappear near the kitchen doors, its gold eyes fixed on something only it could see. She thought about her palm, her hair turning white, the empty years ahead like a field she could plant however she chose.

"I'm not asking," she said, surprised by her own calm. "I'm telling."

Outside, palm fronds rustled in the wind. Somewhere far off, a rooster crowed—a stubborn, hopeful sound against the dying light.
