What the Sphinx Whispered

Maya's hair had other plans today. The humidity had turned her carefully straightened waves into a frizz explosion, and she was already regretting spending twenty minutes on something that now looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket.

"You good?" Leo asked, bouncing a padel racquet on his palm. He'd somehow roped her into joining the new club at school, and honestly? She was mostly here because he'd promised to help her with math homework. Which was desperate, but junior year was already destroying her GPA and her will to live.

"Never been better," Maya deadpanned, wiping her sweaty palms on her shorts. The outdoor courts reflected way too much sunlight, and she could feel her foundation melting off.

"Awww, look at you two!" Kayla called from the bench, eating what looked like a spinach wrap but dropping green stuff all over her shirt. "Third years' cutest couple!"

Maya's face burned hotter than the asphalt. "We're not—" but Kayla was already taking a snap for her story, and whatever. They'd been dealing with rumors since middle school. Leo was just... Leo. Her person. But not her person-person.

"Ignore her," Leo said, but he was grinning. "Ready to get destroyed?"

"In your dreams."

They played for twenty minutes until Maya's arms felt like jelly and she'd managed to hit every ball except the ones actually coming at her. Leo was patient about it, which was worse than if he'd laughed. He kept giving her these soft little encouraging nods like she was a golden retriever who'd finally learned to sit.

After, they sat on the bench while Kayla went to get more spinach wraps because apparently the first one wasn't enough of a tragedy.

"My hair looks insane," Maya groaned, catching her reflection in Leo's phone screen. "Why did I even try?"

Leo studied her for a second. "Nah. It's got vibes."

"Vibes? That's what we're calling 'I got electrocuted'?"

"You know what the sphinx's riddle was?" Leo asked suddenly, which was such a Leo thing to do. Pivot to ancient mythology out of nowhere.

"What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, three in the evening?" Maya rolled her eyes. "Humans. We did this in freshman English."

"Yeah but like... what if it's not about aging?" Leo was spinning his padel racquet now, all focused intensity. "What if it's about different versions of yourself? The kid you were, the person you're figuring out, the one you'll become?"

Maya blinked. The humidity suddenly felt less oppressive. Her hair was still a mess, Kayla was still documenting everything, and she was still failing pre-calc. But somehow, sitting on this bench with Leo in his too-big basketball shorts, watching Kayla somehow get more spinach on her face, it didn't feel like the end of the world.

"You're so weird," she said, but she was smiling. "In a good way."

"I'll take it." Leo stood up and offered her his hand. "One more game?"

Maya took it, letting him pull her up. Her palm felt weirdly steady against his. "Loser buys Kayla another wrap."

"You're on."
