What the Sphinx Whispered

The corporate headquarters rose like a glass pyramid, thirty stories of refraction and ambition. Elena pressed her forehead against the cold window of her twenty-seventh floor office, watching the city blur below. Inside, her phone lit up again—David, the senior architect whose riddles she'd been solving for six months.

"You're thinking too loud," he'd whispered after the Christmas party, his breath warm against her ear while his wife was across the room. Since then, they'd built something architecture couldn't blueprint—a structure of glances, of coffee cups touched just so, of silence that meant everything and nothing.

Her computer chimed. Marcus, their department head, wanted to see her. Marcus was a sphinx in Italian suits, posing questions that weren't questions and expecting answers you had to divine. Last month, when David received the partnership Elena had earned, Marcus had simply raised an eyebrow—amused or challenged? She still didn't know.

"Elena," Marcus said without looking up from his sketches. "The Cairo project. Something's missing."

She stood before his desk, the spinach and walnut salad from lunch settling heavy in her stomach. She and David had designed that proposal together,深夜 conversations fueled by wine and unspoken desires. "The foundation's solid, Marcus. David signed off on it."

"David's... distracted lately." Marcus finally met her eyes. "I need someone who can see what others miss."

His meaning settled like dust. He knew. About the project, about them, about everything.

That evening, a gray cat appeared on her fire escape—the same one that had been showing up since David's promotion. Elena opened the window, let it nudge her hand with its rough tongue. Some things chose you, regardless of what you'd planned.

Her phone buzzed. David: *I didn't know about Marcus.

She typed and deleted three responses before leaving: *Some riddles answer themselves.

The cat purred against her palm. Tomorrow, she'd redesign the Cairo proposal. Tomorrow, she'd tell David everything or nothing. Tonight, she watched the city lights reflect off the pyramid's face and understood what the sphinx had been trying to tell her all along: some questions resolve not into answers, but into the courage to ask them.
