What the Sphinx Whispered
Maya's hair had been her armor since seventh grade—long, dark, perfect. But standing in front of her bathroom mirror on the first day of sophomore year, she grabbed the scissors. Her hands shook. Her friend Jordan had been ghosting her all summer, those reply-free texts stinging more than she'd admit.
Her dad's old sphinx cat, Cleo, wound around her ankles. The wrinkly, hairless creature looked like something ancient, like she knew secrets. Maya had always hated her, but now something clicked. Cleo didn't hide. She just was.
The scissors closed. Dark coils fell like dead things. Maya kept cutting, shorter, shorter, until only half an inch remained. Her scalp felt weirdly naked, exposed. In school bathrooms, girls whispered. Someone posted a photo on the sophomore story with the caption new era??
Jordan finally texted back: saw your hair. what happened lol.
Maya's fingers hovered over the screen. She typed: i cut it. then deleted it. typed: needed a change. deleted it.
Then she heard the rumor: Jordan had made a bet about Maya's hair at summer camp. Some joke about how she'd never cut it. Maya's stomach dropped. That's why the texts had slowed. Jordan had been waiting for the right moment to pretend nothing happened.
In fourth period, Maya found Cleo waiting on her porch when she got home. The sphinx cat stared at her with those ancient eyes. Maya burst into tears, loud messy sobs she'd been holding since June. Cleo didn't run. She pressed her warm, hairless body against Maya's bare calf.
That's when she saw it—Jordan walking a dog down the street. A golden retriever puppy, probably new. Their eyes met. Jordan looked away first.
Maya's fingers found her buzzed hair. She smiled, something real. Some friendships expire. Some armor was never protection anyway. Cleo purred like she'd been waiting for Maya to figure it out all along.
