What the Sphinx Remembers

dogfriendbullsphinx

The limestone sphinx had been watching Elena for three weeks, its chipped face somehow knowing more about her marriage than she did. She sat on the museum crate, coffee in hand, while the restoration team's golden retriever, Buster, rested his head on her knee.

"He likes you," Marcus said, appearing from behind a tapestry. "The dog, I mean. Though honestly, Elena, who wouldn't?"

She swallowed the bitterness. Marcus had been her friend since graduate school, had stood beside her at her wedding, had been the first person she called when David started staying late at the office—those nights when he came home smelling of perfume that wasn't hers.

"The bull market's been good to David," Elena said, tracing the crack in the sphinx's paw. "Good enough that he can afford mistakes."

Marcus's phone buzzed. He checked it, then met her eyes with something like pity. "Your sister's having drinks tonight. With him."

The confirmation hit her like physical violence. She'd suspected. The late nights. The sudden glow in David's eyes when he mentioned Sarah's name at dinner. The way her younger sister had started dressing differently, wearing perfume that now lingered on David's collars.

Buster whined, pressing closer.

"The sphinx asked a riddle," Elena said quietly. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, three in the evening. The answer: man. But I think there's another riddle. Who destroys everything they touch because they can't bear to be ordinary?"

"Elena—"

"No. It's fine." She stood, the dog lifting his head hopefully. "David always wanted a bull—aggressive, territorial, uncompromising. Your sister always wanted what you had. The sphinx eats whoever can't solve its riddle."

"What's your riddle?" Marcus asked gently.

Elena smiled, something sharp and ancient in it. "How to survive the people you loved enough to let destroy you."

Outside, the city hummed with possibility. Inside, the sphinx watched, implacable as memory, waiting for the next soul to believe they could outsmart fate.
