What the Sphinx Remembers

The corporate retreat had been her husband's idea—something about rekindling the spark that forty-hour weeks had extinguished. Elena found herself at the edge of the pool at 3 AM, shirtless and swimming laps while Marcus slept in their suite, the papaya he'd declined at breakfast churning in her stomach.

"You're like a shark," a voice said from the darkness.

Elena stopped mid-stroke, treading water. A woman stood at the pool's edge—red hair catching the moonlight, eyes sharp and calculating. She reminded Elena of a fox she'd once watched from her kitchen window, wary but willing to venture closer for food.

"If you stop moving, you die," Elena said, treading water.

"So they say." The woman sat at the edge, feet dangling in the water. "I'm Sarah. Marketing division. You're Elena, right? The architect who designed that pyramid-shaped monstrosity in Dubai?"

"It won an award."

"I'm sure it did." Sarah's tone suggested she knew something Elena didn't. "My ex-husband worked on the project. He mentioned you never visited the site during construction."

Elena gripped the pool's edge. "I was—"

"Busy. Building someone else's empire. Just like all of us." Sarah gestured toward the desert beyond the resort. "The real sphinx is out there, you know. Not the tourist trap version. The original one, buried somewhere beneath all this corporate ambition."

"What's it asking?"

"The riddle?" Sarah smiled, but her eyes remained distant. "It's not 'what walks on four legs then two then three.' That's the sanitized version. The real question is: what becomes of a woman who builds monuments to other people's dreams?"

The water suddenly felt cold. Elena thought of all the drawings she'd made as a girl—houses with impossible angles, towers that pierced clouds. The papaya rose in her throat.

"I should go."

"You should." Sarah stood, fox-like again, ready to bolt. "But Elena? The sphinx doesn't devour those who can't answer. It just watches them turn to stone."
