What the Sphinx Knew

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, poking at her hair. Again. The frizz had reached epic proportions – like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket, then applied hairspray.

"You need this." Her mom appeared at the door, holding out a orange bottle. "Hair vitamins. They'll make it smooth and shiny."

Maya took the bottle, glancing at her phone. Instagram was blowing up with photos from Chloe's party last night. Everyone looked so perfect, so effortless, while Maya had stayed home, "+1 studying" as her excuse, but really just not feeling it.

She threw on her favorite orange hoodie – the one that hid everything – and headed to the park. It was her spot. The place where nobody expected her to be anyone.

That's when she saw it.

The cat sat on a bench, watching her. It was unlike any cat she'd ever seen – wrinkly, almost naked, with enormous ears. A sphinx cat. Hairless.

Maya approached slowly. "Hey little guy." The cat blinked slowly, then butted its head against her hand, purring like a tiny engine. "You're not hiding anything, are you?"

She sat with that cat for an hour. It owned its weirdness. It didn't care what anyone thought. It just was.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up about another party tonight. Maya looked at the sphinx cat, then at her reflection in the phone screen – frizzy hair, tired eyes, all of it.

She typed back: "Count me in."

The sphinx cat blinked at her, like it knew something she was just figuring out: some things are worth more than perfect.

Maya walked home, still wearing her orange hoodie, still with the frizzy hair, still carrying those vitamins she'd probably never take. But for the first time in forever, she didn't want to hide.
