What the Palms Whisper
Elena stood behind the row of swaying **palms**, her gin and tonic sweating against her palm, watching Miguel laugh at something Sofia had said on the **padel** court. The Dubai resort glittered around them—a corporate retreat, they'd called it, though she knew better now.
Three weeks of suspicion had crystallized into certainty last night, when she'd found the encrypted messages on his phone. Someone inside their startup was leaking to competitors. Miguel had sworn he'd find the **spy**, but Elena had realized with cold clarity that the spy was sleeping beside her.
Now she watched them play—his competitive edge softened by something more tender than mentorship. The way he touched Sofia's lower back after a point. The way she tilted into his touch like a flower seeking sun.
"You **bear** the weight of the world," her mother used to say, "but you don't have to bear betrayal alone."
Elena had never understood that until now.
The game ended. Sofia high-fived Miguel, her hand lingering in his palm. Elena's phone buzzed—her attorney confirming the divorce filing, the forensic accountant ready to trace the siphoned funds.
She should feel devastated. Instead, she felt something like relief, sharp and bright as broken glass. The padel court became a stage where her marriage performed its final scene.
Miguel looked up, caught her eye across the palms. For a moment, something like panic flickered across his face—the recognition that she knew, had always known, had been waiting for him to prove her wrong.
He never had.
Elena raised her glass in a mock toast, turned toward the hotel lobby, and didn't look back.
