What the Palm Trees Know

The papaya sat untouched on Elena's breakfast plate, its orange flesh glistening like a fresh wound. Three days at the Pyramid Resort & Spa, and Marcus still hadn't noticed she'd stopped eating fruit with breakfast. Or maybe he had and simply didn't care anymore.

"Corporate needs me at the summit meeting," he'd said that morning, adjusting his tie in the mirror's reflection that showed everything but his eyes. The pyramid-shaped convention center loomed beyond their balcony, a glass monument to ambition that cost more per night than Elena's monthly salary.

She went swimming alone in the infinity pool at dusk, the water silken and otherworldly. That's when she saw the cat — a ginger tabby that materialized like an echo, jumping onto the balcony two doors down. Marcus's balcony. Or so she'd thought until a woman's hand reached down, palm open with what looked like sliced papaya.

Elena swam harder, cutting through the water until her muscles burned. She'd known something was wrong since the booking — Marcus never splurged, never initiated trips, never chose places with infinity pools. The Pyramid had been his idea, a "celebration" of his promotion to VP. But she'd seen the way his phone lit up at 2 AM with messages he quickly silenced.

Later, she followed the cat through the garden, past swaying palms that whispered in the wind. The cat knew things. It padded confidently to room 312, identical to theirs, and sat meowing at the door until a woman opened it — not Marcus's assistant, not anyone from corporate. Just a woman in a hotel robe, holding a glass of wine, looking surprised when she saw Elena standing there.

"I'm sorry," Elena said, though she didn't know why. "I think this is my husband's cat."

The confusion on the woman's face said everything. The papaya on the breakfast plate made sense now. Marcus's sudden interest in tropical destinations. The pyramid of lies he'd built, level by level, until it collapsed under the weight of a ginger cat and a woman who wasn't his wife.

Elena walked back to their room, packed her bag, and left without a note. Some pyramids were meant to be abandoned.
