What the Palm Revealed

Maria traced the lifeline on Julian's palm, her finger lingering on the break in the skin where his story fractured. The beach bar pulsed with reggae and laughter, but they existed in a quiet bubble, the salt air thick between them.

"Your lifeline shows a child," the palm reader had told her earlier that afternoon. "But there's something else... a betrayal. A fox in your garden."

Maria had laughed. Foxes didn't exist in suburban gardens. But the image had haunted her all evening.

Now, studying Julian's hand, she saw the truth he'd been hiding for months. The way he'd been working late. The encrypted messages on his phone. The sudden interest in his appearance.

"What are you thinking?" Julian asked, his voice tight.

"About foxes," she said. "How they're beautiful but they'll destroy everything you love just to survive."

Julian's hand jerked away. "What?"

"Her name is Sarah, isn't it?"

The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Behind them, a couple's dog barked at a seagull, the sound sharp and lonely in the darkness.

"Maria, I can explain—"

"Don't." She stood up, her chair scraping against the concrete. "The palm reader told me something else today. She said some wounds heal wrong. They become part of you, like a palm print on glass. You can't wipe it away. You just have to live with it."

Julian reached for her hand, but she was already walking toward the ocean, where the moonlight caught the crests of waves like silver wire. The fox had been in her garden all along, eating everything she'd planted while she'd been busy watering a garden that was already dead.

She'd survive this. But she'd never be the same.
