What the Palm Remembers

Elena hadn't stepped foot in this town for fifteen years, not since the night she'd packed her car and driven west with nothing but a terrified heart and a half-empty tank of gas. Now she stood in the dusty office of Madame Zora, palm outstretched, the woman's aged fingers tracing the lines of her hand like they were reading braille.

"You came back for him," Madame Zora said, her voice gravel and smoke. "But you won't find what you're looking for."

Elena pulled her hand back, suddenly cold. Outside, the autumn wind carried the smell of burning leaves and something metallic - like blood, or old pennies. She'd returned for Danny's funeral, they'd said. Cancer, aggressive and cruel. But the truth was more complicated.

She drove to the old baseball field where they'd spent countless childhood evenings, Danny pitching to no one, Elena cheering from the bleachers. The field was overgrown now, the backboard fallen to rust. Found his baseball cap there, somehow preserved against the elements, the Chicago Cubs logo faded but unmistakable.

Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. The message: "He didn't have cancer. That's what they tell people when the truth is uglier. He never stopped looking for you."

Elena pressed the phone to her chest, her palm still tingling from Madame Zora's touch. All these years, she'd thought she was the one who'd gotten away, who'd escaped their dead-end town and the suffocating expectations that came with it. But maybe she'd just been running.

She returned to Madame Zora's office, but the door was locked, a handwritten note taped to the glass: "Some futures change the moment you acknowledge them."

Elena drove to the cemetery, Danny's cap on the passenger seat, her phone silent. Found his grave fresh-dug, the earth still raw. She knelt, pressed her palm against the grass, and finally let herself remember everything she'd buried: not just their friendship, but what it could have become. What it should have become.

"I'm sorry," she whispered to the empty earth. "I thought I had time."

The autumn wind answered, carrying her words away like secrets
