What the Fox Knows
The empty bottle sat on the counter—her vitamin D supplement, finished. Another month of their marriage dissolved into nothing. Marcus had forgotten to replace it, just as he'd forgotten to replace the intimacy that once lived in the space between their bodies.
Emma found herself at the lake at dawn, the air thick with the kind of silence that follows things left unsaid for too long. She was swimming before she even decided to, the water shocking against her skin, carrying her away from the shore where her wedding ring felt like a shackle she'd voluntarily clasped around her own throat. The cold was honest. The water asked nothing of her.
Their golden retriever, Buster, waited on the dock, his dark eyes following her with that terrible loyalty dogs possess—the kind that holds even when you don't deserve it. He'd been Marcus's idea, another projection of the life they were supposed to build together. Now he was just another witness to the quiet demolition of their shared life.
That's when she saw it: a fox at the water's edge, impossibly still, watching her with eyes that seemed to know everything. Its russet coat caught the first light of morning, beautiful and wild and utterly untamed. It reminded her of something she'd lost—the part of herself that had believed love could conquer practical things like resentment and accumulated small betrayals.
The fox didn't run. It simply watched, as if recognizing a fellow creature caught between worlds. Emma treaded water, understanding suddenly that she'd been swimming in circles for years, exhausted from fighting a current that wanted only to carry her somewhere else.
Back at the house, Marcus was asleep. She placed the empty vitamin bottle on his nightstand—a small message, maybe. Or perhaps nothing more than an empty container for all the things she no longer knew how to say.
Buster curled at her feet, still loyal, still waiting. Outside, somewhere beyond the glass, the fox had already vanished into the forest, taking with it the secret of how to leave gracefully.
