What the Dog Knows

Margaret sat on her front porch, the same porch her grandfather built eighty years ago, and watched her great-grandson Leo chasing after old Buster. The golden retriever, now fifteen and arthritic, could barely manage a trot, but his tail still wagged with the same enthusiasm Margaret remembered from her own childhood.

"He's running like you used to," her daughter Eleanor said, settling into the wicker chair beside her. "Remember how you'd tear through the neighborhood until the streetlights came on?"

Margaret smiled, reaching up to pat her silver hair, now cut short and practical. "I remember your grandmother chasing me with a brush every Sunday morning. She said a girl's hair was her crowning glory, but I was always more interested in the crown of the oak tree behind the church."

Buster had flopped onto the grass, his breathing labored but content. Leo, six years old with the same stubborn cowlick Margaret's son had inherited, curled up beside the dog, stroking his graying muzzle with gentle reverence.

"You know," Margaret said softly, "Buster's father was the first dog I ever trained. That was back when your father was Leo's age. The dog knew things we didn't. He could hear thunder coming before the clouds gathered. He knew which neighbors needed visiting, which children had lost their way home."

Eleanor reached over and squeezed her mother's hand. "Just like you, Mom. Just like you."

Margaret thought about that — about what it meant to grow old in a world that kept running faster, about the way wisdom settled in bones the way grace settled in tired muscles. She remembered her mother's thick braid, how it had swung like a pendulum marking time, and how her own silver hair now carried the same rhythm.

"The running never really stops," she said at last. "It just changes form. First we run because we can, then we run because we must, and finally we run only in our dreams." She paused, watching Leo press his forehead against Buster's. "But love? Love just keeps gathering speed."
