What the Dog Knew

The goldfish had been swimming in circles for three years, oblivious to the slow disintegration of everything around it. Elena watched it through the glass, her own reflection ghosting over the orange fish—a face she barely recognized anymore.

Her iPhone vibrated on the counter, that specific frequency that meant him. Nathan. The man who'd moved out six weeks ago but still occupied the rooms of her mind like furniture she couldn't move. She didn't pick up. Some things were better left unanswered.

Barnaby, their golden retriever, rested his chin on her knee. His eyes held that particular knowing quality dogs develop—like priests who've heard too many confessions. He'd known about the other woman before Elena did. Had probably smelled her on Nathan's coat months before Elena found the lipstick on his collar. Dogs know everything. They just can't speak.

Outside, lightning fractured the sky, illuminating the apartment in stark, violent flashes. The storm had been building all afternoon, the air thick with the kind of tension that makes your skin prickle. Elena felt like she was waiting for something to break—the weather, her resolve, the invisible thread still tying her to him.

The goldfish rose to the surface, mouth opening and closing in silent bubbles. It would die soon. Everything did, eventually. Relationships, fish, the certainty that you'd ever feel whole again.

Another text. She glanced down: *"Can we talk?"*

Barnaby whined softly, pressed his wet nose against her palm. Outside, thunder rattled the windows. Lightning flashed again, closer this time, and for a moment, everything was stark and undeniable—the half-empty closet, the single toothbrush holder, the way she'd been measuring time in missed opportunities instead of moments.

"No," she whispered to the phone, to the fish, to the version of herself still checking her notifications like they might contain redemption.

She deleted the text without opening it. The goldfish swam on, indifferent to human drama. Barnaby sighed, content, and settled more firmly against her leg. The storm would pass. Everything did.
