What the Cat Knew

The iPhone buzzed against the nightstand at 2:14 AM, illuminating the bedroom with its ghostly blue glow. Elena's heart hammered as she reached for it—not her phone, but Marcus's. He'd fallen asleep after their anniversary dinner, exhausted from the bear of a project he'd been managing at work, or so he'd said.

Her fingers trembled as she tapped the screen. A message from someone named Lena: "Can't wait to see you tomorrow. Same place?"

Elena's hair, dark and falling loose around her shoulders, suddenly felt like a burden. She stared at the text, her palm sweating against the cool glass. Seven years of marriage reduced to three lines on a screen.

On the windowsill, their cat—a raggedy tomcat named Barnaby they'd rescued together—watched her with amber eyes. He'd been there when Marcus proposed on the beach, there when Elena's mother died, there through every argument and reconciliation. The cat knew everything, somehow. He'd probably smelled the other woman's perfume on Marcus's clothes weeks ago.

She set the phone back on the nightstand, exactly where it had been. Her palm pressed against her mouth to stifle a sob. In that moment, she hated Marcus with a precision that terrified her—hated the way his hair had started graying at the temples, hated the way he looked so peaceful in his deception, hated that she still loved him enough that her first instinct wasn't to wake him and scream.

Instead, she went to the kitchen. Barnaby followed, weaving between her legs with a demanding purr. She poured herself a glass of wine and sat in the dark, the cat jumping into her lap. His fur was thick and warm against her skin.

"You know," she whispered to him, "you're the only one who's been honest with me today."

The cat blinked slowly, then began to knead her thigh with his paws, exactly as he had the night she'd told Marcus she was leaving her job to pursue painting. That night, Marcus had held her and promised they'd figure it out together. Tonight, he slept on, while Elena sat in the kitchen making plans that would rearrange both their lives forever.
