What the Bull Taught Me

The summer I turned eighteen held unexpected magic on Uncle Luis's farm. A magnificent papaya tree stood sentinel near the house, dropping sun-ripened fruit that burst with tropical sweetness. I'd carefully harvest them, treating each papaya like a precious gift from the earth.

Behind the farmhouse, an old swimming pool had transformed into something extraordinary—a verdant garden where spinach thrived in unexpected abundance. What once echoed with children's laughter now nurtured life in its quiet way, the converted pool yielding tender greens that fed our family through generations.

The farm bull was my first true challenge. An enormous creature named Saturn, he roamed the pastures with grumpy authority. The hired hands warned me to keep my distance, but I sensed something different beneath his imposing exterior—perhaps loneliness, perhaps wisdom earned through years.

Each morning, I'd approach his fence with cautious determination, offering papaya slices as a peace offering. Weeks passed before he finally accepted them from my hand. Those quiet moments taught me that patience opens doors where force cannot, that even the most stubborn hearts can be softened by persistent kindness.

One scorching July afternoon, Saturn charged toward the spinach garden with terrifying purpose. Instead of running, I stood my ground, speaking softly as he'd heard me do before. Something in my voice reached him, and he halted, snorting instead of trampling the tender plants we'd so carefully tended.

Now, watching my granddaughter listen wide-eyed to this tale, I understand how life prepares us. The lessons whispered by that bull, the patience learned through papaya offerings, the growth nurtured in a repurposed pool—they seeded the courage that would carry me through seventy years of marriage, raising children, and facing life's storms.

"You know," I tell her, squeezing her hand, "sometimes the most important teachers have four legs and horns. Saturn taught me that gentleness can tame the fiercest forces, whether they're angry bulls or life's hardest challenges."

I reach for another papaya, its sunset colors glowing in my weathered hands. "And that spinach garden? It became my own garden forty years later. Some things, like wisdom and good earth, only get better with time."
