What She Left Behind

hathaircat

The hat sat on the hook by the door for six months after Elena died. A navy fedora, slightly crushed at the brim where she'd nervously rolled it between her fingers during difficult conversations. Marcus couldn't bring himself to move it.

He was losing his hair anyway — stress, his doctor said, though Marcus knew better. It was grief, plain and simple, eating him from the inside out. Each morning he'd catch his reflection in the mirror: thinner face, graying temples, the familiar curve of Elena's smile missing from his own expression.

Their cat, Luna, had taken to sleeping on Elena's pillow. The animal's presence was both comfort and cruelty. Luna would stare at Marcus with those judging amber eyes, as if asking why the house had gone so quiet, why Elena's laughter no longer echoed down the hallway.

"You loved that hat more than me," Elena had joked once, drunk on expensive wine and the anniversary they'd almost forgotten. Marcus had denied it, but later, watching her sleep, he'd admitted to himself that the hat represented something he couldn't articulate. Freedom, maybe. The version of himself he'd been before mortgages and compromise.

The day he finally moved the hat, Luna wound around his legs, purring. Marcus found himself sobbing in the hallway, clutching navy felt and cat hair alike. Something broke loose inside him — something about how grief isn't linear, how you don't move on by forgetting but by carrying differently.

He placed the hat in the donation box with shaking hands. Luna watched from the doorway, then trotted over and jumped onto his lap, kneading his thighs with deliberate precision.

"Okay," Marcus whispered to the empty room. "Okay."

His phone buzzed — a message from his sister, checking in. For the first time in months, he typed a real response: Not okay, but trying. Tomorrow might be better. It might not. But he'd keep showing up.

Luna purred louder, vibrating against his chest like a second heartbeat. Some things, Marcus realized, you don't get to keep. Others stay with you whether you want them to or not.
