What She Left Behind

The dinner sat untouched on the table—wilted spinach, garlic burning in the pan, two wine glasses breathing air they'd never be drunk from. Elena sat in the stillness of their apartment, her phone face-down beside her plate, as if the mere sight of it might summon him back.

Three hours ago, Marcus had walked out. Not with a suitcase, not with the dramatic flourish she'd imagined during all those months of suspicion. Just his woolen hat pulled low over those ears he'd always been self-conscious about, and a mumbled something about needing air.

The iPhone had lit up then, not hers. A notification from his pocket, bright against the dark movie theater. She hadn't meant to look. But she had.

Now she sat with the spinach growing cold, remembering the way his hair had smelled that morning—cedar and something else. Something floral. Something that wasn't her perfume.

She'd always loved the way he looked in that hat. How it made him seem younger, softer than the corporate armor he wore to work. How it had covered the gray that had started appearing at his temples last year, the same gray she'd found endearing. The same gray that, according to the photos attached to that notification, some other woman was finding endearing too.

Elena stood at last, carried the plates to the sink. The spinach slid into the garbage disposal, a dark tangle of green like something drowned. She washed her hands, watched her reflection in the kitchen window.

Her own hair needed cutting. She'd been meaning to make an appointment for weeks.

The iPhone buzzed on the table.

She didn't pick it up.

Instead, she went to the closet, took down his favorite hat. Pressed it to her face, inhaled the ghost of him, and then dropped it into the box she'd start packing in the morning.

Some endings were quiet things. Not explosions, not screaming matches. Just cold spinach and a hat that still smelled like someone who'd already gone.
