What She Found

The hair on his pillow wasn't hers.

Maya lay awake at 3 AM, tracing the strand — long, blonde, and utterly wrong against their Egyptian cotton sheets. Daniel's hair was dark, cropped short. Hers was a dark pixie cut. This belonged to someone else.

For three weeks, she'd played the spy. Checking his phone while he showered. Tracking his location through the Find My app they'd shared since their anniversary. Noting the late arrivals, the vague excuses about "mergers and acquisitions" at the firm.

She'd even started photographing his receipts. The $200 dinners. The hotel charges in their own city, billed as "client entertainment." The language of corporate infidelity.

Then came the vitamin bottles.

Daniel had started taking them six months ago — small white pills from an expensive compounding pharmacy downtown. He'd insisted she try them too. "They're cutting edge," he'd said, pressing the amber bottle into her palm. "Something my doctor recommended. You'll feel amazing."

And she had. Energy, clarity, better sleep. But also strange dreams. Memory lapses. Whole hours she couldn't account for.

Yesterday, while Daniel was at work, she'd taken one of his pills to a forensic analyst she'd found through a Reddit thread. The text arrived at midnight: *Placebo. Mostly cornstarch. Trace elements of something that induces suggestibility. Not FDA approved.*

The pills were bullshit. The happy marriage was bullshit. The firm that supposedly employed him didn't exist — at least, not under the name on his business cards.

Maya slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb him. In the home office, she found his laptop unlocked. A single document glowed on the screen: an expense report for the biotech company that manufactured the vitamins.

The hair on the pillow. The pills. The lies.

She called her contact at the analyst firm. "Run a DNA test on the sample I gave you."

"Why?"

"I need to know if the woman sleeping in my bed is my husband."

The silence stretched. Finally: "That'll be extra."

"Charge it to the same card," Maya said. "The one Daniel thinks I don't know about."
